Seriously though, when I was in school we did all kind of spec work… of course, I suppose to be spec work SOMEONE eventually has to get paid… so maybe it’s just… FREE work that we did. ——-

Spec work is any job for which the client expects to see examples or a finished product before agreeing to pay a fee.
