Have you tried typing a URL of any real length into a smartphone by hand before? Incredibly annoying. Scanning a QR code, on the other hand, is two button presses - one to start the barcode app and one to visit the URL it returns. Vastly superior.
QR codes are mainly used in marketing fluff pieces that lead you to a landing page with no navigation to the actual site of the target. That’s not to say they are never used in a more meaningful way, But more often than not, it obfuscates the fact that I am going to a destination that doesn’t really hold interest for me, because it’s a one time use for a promo only.
Colbow told me a story of QR codes being used in a helpful and meaningful way that bring their reputation back up…if only we cared about meaningful, useful things in America. :p
@Victor and @sprul: Well, living in Germany, I believe the porn thing would not work. Try someting antisemic or antiislam. Either way, you will be hunted ...
QR codes are useful in that you can put them on Business cards and have all your contact info, ready to be instantly saved to a persons contacts on their phone (easier than typing it in manually, and impresses with ease. I.E. I have a QR code on my Resume).
Stores even use them for product tracking now. Best Buy has QR codes on most larger items (laptops, fridges, TVs) and you can instantly have all the items info on your phone, ready to be compared with any other item you scan.
This is brilliant. Though I’m not actually convinced that anyone scans QR codes to begin with - they seem to be something that every marketer wants to use, but the public largely doesn’t care.
Before the advent of QR codes, we had to go to web addresses by typing them specifically which was to say the least, a bit annoying. By the way, this comic really took an interesting turn of events regarding the QR codes and how they could be manipulated. Browsing has become quite fast thanks to QR codes
I think the QR code just hasn’t been applied in the right medium yet. It’s an odd tool to use in advertising as advertisers know that their target audience has a limited attention span.
Perhaps the QR code may have a better life in inventory management…where it came from.
